The great turn-out indicates the desire and opportunity for long term capital in Tanzania
Creating a platform for local businesses and investors will provide better access to growth capital and help boost Tanzania’s private sector development
DOB Equity, a leading Dutch family office investing in East Africa, initiated and co-hosted the Tanzania PE and VC Conference yesterday 23 March in Dar es Salaam, together with the East African Venture Capital Association and the international law firm Clyde & Co.
The initiative brought together entrepreneurs and private investors to discuss the opportunities and challenges of investing in Tanzania. Despite huge growth opportunities, the investment sector in Tanzania is still nascent and relatively fragmented. However, yesterday’s event showed that there are ample investment opportunities and an evident need for a unified and organized investment sector.
The event highlighted successful investments and growth opportunities in sectors like agriculture and FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods), renewable energy, infrastructure and the financial sector. The audience learned of numerous investment and growth opportunities in Tanzania and the need for an enabled investment environment.
The majority of international and emerging markets focused investors have offices in Nairobi, Kenya, which is seen as the financial regional hub for East Africa. Yesterday’s event showed the need in Tanzania for truly long term capital providers, to support both younger companies in early stages of life as well as providing growth capital to more mature companies.
DOB Equity is one of the few investors with offices in both Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, capitalizing on Tanzania’s consistent strong growth, and to assist private companies to roll out their business models across the region.
Brigit van Dijk – van de Reijt, CEO of DOB Equity says: “The opportunities in Tanzania are there, especially for those who could provide long term capital. Tanzania is a fast growing economy with substantial resources and commodities, a superb geographic location, large scale infrastructural projects, appealing demographics and a next generation of ambitious entrepreneurs. In addition we see an increasing number of Kenyan based companies like M-KOPA and PowerGen rolling out their business concepts to Tanzania and other countries in the region.”
“Having offices across East Africa will help to expand these businesses and transform them into regional champions”.
DOB Equity says that Tanzania looks set to continue its economic growth over the long term. Further, a good partnership between the government, private sector investors, and entrepreneurs will stimulate and enhance private sector development, which will positively impact the lives of many lower-income groups.
